Dan is welcomed into the Gossip Girlblog as a Brooklyn outsider who realizes the peculiarity of the Upper East Side when he begins to date Serena van der Woodsen.

Background: Dan was born to Rufus, member of 90’s rock band Lincoln Hawk, and Allison Humphrey, a painter. The two are also the parents of Dan’s sister Jenny. Dan is extremely intelligent, attractive and academically talented, but is still ridicule by his prep school peers because he is much less wealthy than them. He as been secretly in love with Serena ever since he bumped into her at a party in his freshman year. He was a childhood friend of Vanessa, but she moves away for his entire sophomore year of high school. When Serena is back in town, Dan and Serena reacquaint themselves with each other and slowly begin a long, complex, yet loving relationship. In his senior year of high school, his father marries Serena’s mother Lily, and Serena and Dan decide they can’t be together because of it. Dan was later accepted to Yale University, but had to go to NYU for financial reasons. (This is a plot hole, as Yale is in fact cheaper than NYU, but moving on.) However, Dan is quite happy at NYU as he has received massive education and help with his writing as well as internship opportunities, including one at W magazine with Blair. In his freshman year of college, Dan cared for a baby who he thought was his son, but turned out to be another’s.

Relationships: While Serena and Dan still love each other and are extremely close, other lovers and flings of Dan’s include Vanessa, Georgina, Ms. Carr, and Olivia, but he has had a few others with fellow students in high school and college. It is also rumored that Dan may develop feelings for Blair.

Personality: Dan is witty, sarcastic, good-looking, intelligent, hard working and loyal. He is very protective of his friends and family. Dan, like Nate, always tries to do the right thing (though Dan tends to screw up a bit more than Nate). He tends to be too quick to judge and assume, but he generally has good intentions. As an aspiring writer, Dan deals with his pain, rejection, and depression differently than other characters on the show.

Style: Lonely Boy’s style is very hipster, geek-chic, and, well, sexy! His favorite articles of clothing include striped cardigans, military jackets, vintage tees, skinny jeans, converse shoes, messenger bags, Dockers pants, flannel and button down shirts, oxfords… basically either higher-end or independent-brand versions of male clothing found at Urban Outfitters or even H&M. Dan is always described as being good-looking. His sideburns tend to be larger, and there are days where he may not shave, giving him the classic artist’s rough five o’clock shadow. His hair changes throughout the show, but whether it’s short or long and wavy his hair is always gorgeous!
