Vanessa Marigold Abrams

Vanessa Abrahams is a quirky, aspiring filmmaker and life-long friend (and occasional love interest) of Dan Humphrey.
Background: Vanessa has loving, eclectic, hippie parents. Her family moves the Vermont, but in Season 1 Vanessa returns to Brooklyn. Having been raised to always speak her mind, Vanessa doesn’t hesitate to blatantly mock or ridicule the rich. This makes it even more shocking for her when she finds Dan’s love interest is Serena van der Woodsen, a member of one of the richest families in the city. On the television show, Vanessa has been raised to be unconventional. Regardless, she takes the SATs and ends up going to NYU Tisch School of the Arts with Dan, as well as –for a short time – Blair and Georgina.
Relationships: Vanessa has a few lovers on the Gossip Girl show, including Nate Archibald, Dan Humphrey, and Dan and Serena’s long lost half-brother, Scott.
Personality: Vanessa is very fond of making amateur films and documentaries, as well as watching them. She is a hard-worker: She is almost always employed, whether it be at a coffee shop, Rufus’s gallery, or in a communications internship, as well as being a full-time student. Not only does Vanessa enjoy poking fun at the rich and the famous, but also she claims to despise their way of living. Vanessa’s worst qualities – jealousy and manipulation – emerge whenever she is immersed into the Upper East Side world. Ergo, this girl is far more comfortable with her Brooklyn-filmmaking, freethinking way of life.
Style: Vanessa has a very bohemian, Native American, and 60’s-hippe-influenced style. She loves wearing bright colors and patterns, especially in the form of tunics, bold jewelry, letterman jackets, and shoes. Vanessa also enjoys bold eye shadows. She is one of the few characters on the show that gains more fashion influence from Brooklyn than the Upper East Side. She is still a very experimental person, so her style is still changing and developing!
Nathaniel Fitzwilliam Archibald

Considered the Upper East Side’s ‘golden boy’, Nate isn’t as closely followed by the Gossip Girl blogger as his other friends, but he is certainly always involved in the drama!
Background: Nate was born to Howard “The Captain” and Anne Archibald (of the Vanderbilt family). Nate has been very close friends with Chuck, Blair and Serena since early childhood, and he dubbed their group the “non-judging breakfast club”! Despite his family’s many scandals, Nate’s integrity and moral compass have always stayed wholesome. Even so, he still occasionally smokes marijuana with his friend Chuck, though he generally disapproves of Chuck’s risqué activities. During his junior year of high school, Nate announces wants to stay in Manhattan despite his parents desire to send him to Dartmouth. During this time, Nate also has to deal with the reality that his long-term girlfriend cheated on him with his best friend Chuck. Jenny has always has a long-lived crush on Nate, but Nate refuses to reciprocate these feelings. During Nate’s senior year when he was temporarily homeless, Dan took him in and they’ve been very good friends ever since.
Relationships: Nate dated Blair for the majority of his life, but they are no longer in love. Nate goes on to date Vanessa and Serena, as well as a few other partners of shorter-lived romances such as Juliet Sharp, cougar Catharine Mason and a member of a family the Archibalds hate, Bree Buckley. Jenny Humphrey makes fantastic attempts to seduce him, but Nate does not reciprocate these feelings.
Personality: Nate is imperfect but he always tries to do the right thing. While he may be wrong in some certain situation, he never plays games of deception and manipulation as virtually every other character on the show does at one point or another. He is a B-average student but gets accepted into Ivy-leagues because of his family’s popularity and wealth. Nate is also exceptionally good-looking, and therefore has also been given special treatment. Situations like these have made Nate a person who feels undeserving, and therefore he tries to make up for it by always having a sound foundation of morals and direction. Nate has many issues with not only his father and mother, but also his grandfather and the rest of the Vanderbilt side of the family.
Style: Nate wears plain yet fashionable clothing. He favors khakis, argyles, cable-knit sweaters, and general preppy, J. Crew and Ralph Lauren styles. Nate tends to stick to navy blues, tans, and grays, with the occasional red, yellow and green.
Charles Bartholomew Bass

Charles Bartholomew Bass is arguably the most complex male character on the show. Gossip Girl blog readers know he can say and do pretty much anything because, well, he’s Chuck Bass!
Background: Chuck was born to Bart Bass, a self-made billionaire. Chuck grew up spoiled yet generally uncared for by his father. Chuck’s mother died after giving birth to him. Chuck is the Upper East Side’s designated ‘bad boy’. Charles lost his virginity to Georgina Sparks when he was twelve years old. He is manipulative, risqué, and gets out of pretty much anything by uttering the simple, infamous phrase “I’m Chuck Bass”. At first glance (and second… and third…), he is a terrible person. Still, his ever-extending character arc continually exposes the reality of his caring, wounded heart. While his junior year of high school begins with Chuck throwing illegal parties, hitting on a vulnerable Serena and nearly raping Jenny, he slowly begins to grow a heart. In the middle of his junior year of high school, he has a drunken hook-up with his best friend’s girlfriend, Blair. After Chuck graduates and begins a loving relationship with Blair, he thinks he finds his mother. He has many more family issues following this ordeal. When the majority of Chuck’s other friends go to college, Charles begins working on building his own business legacy to mimic his deceased father’s. When Chuck is approximately nineteen years old, muggers shoot Chuck and steal an engagement ring intended for Blair. Chuck, under a different identity, then moves to France with a girl, but he soon returns to Manhattan with his real name.
Relationships: Chuck has one true love interest, Blair, but he has had small affairs and hook-ups with countless women, but more notably Eva Coupeau and Raina Thorpe.
Personality: With both of Chuck’s parents deceased and his technical mother Lily manipulating his life and company, Chuck has many family/abandonment/trust issues. While he is very close to his friend Nate, as well as his stepsister Serena, Chuck has only truly opened his heart to Blair. Despite this, their relationship is complicated and very on-again off-again. Chuck has many other flings in-between.
Style: Chuck’s style is very eclectic yet preppy. He loves vests, bowties, unique tailored suits, scarves, cardigans, suspenders, cashmere and velvet. He wears many colors, usually pastel or pinstriped. He generally mixes vintage styles with splashes of modern color, and he hardly ever wears short-sleeved shirts. His hair has is continually changing, but it generally looks polished.

Dan is welcomed into the Gossip Girlblog as a Brooklyn outsider who realizes the peculiarity of the Upper East Side when he begins to date Serena van der Woodsen.
Background: Dan was born to Rufus, member of 90’s rock band Lincoln Hawk, and Allison Humphrey, a painter. The two are also the parents of Dan’s sister Jenny. Dan is extremely intelligent, attractive and academically talented, but is still ridicule by his prep school peers because he is much less wealthy than them. He as been secretly in love with Serena ever since he bumped into her at a party in his freshman year. He was a childhood friend of Vanessa, but she moves away for his entire sophomore year of high school. When Serena is back in town, Dan and Serena reacquaint themselves with each other and slowly begin a long, complex, yet loving relationship. In his senior year of high school, his father marries Serena’s mother Lily, and Serena and Dan decide they can’t be together because of it. Dan was later accepted to Yale University, but had to go to NYU for financial reasons. (This is a plot hole, as Yale is in fact cheaper than NYU, but moving on.) However, Dan is quite happy at NYU as he has received massive education and help with his writing as well as internship opportunities, including one at W magazine with Blair. In his freshman year of college, Dan cared for a baby who he thought was his son, but turned out to be another’s.
Relationships: While Serena and Dan still love each other and are extremely close, other lovers and flings of Dan’s include Vanessa, Georgina, Ms. Carr, and Olivia, but he has had a few others with fellow students in high school and college. It is also rumored that Dan may develop feelings for Blair.
Personality: Dan is witty, sarcastic, good-looking, intelligent, hard working and loyal. He is very protective of his friends and family. Dan, like Nate, always tries to do the right thing (though Dan tends to screw up a bit more than Nate). He tends to be too quick to judge and assume, but he generally has good intentions. As an aspiring writer, Dan deals with his pain, rejection, and depression differently than other characters on the show.
Style: Lonely Boy’s style is very hipster, geek-chic, and, well, sexy! His favorite articles of clothing include striped cardigans, military jackets, vintage tees, skinny jeans, converse shoes, messenger bags, Dockers pants, flannel and button down shirts, oxfords… basically either higher-end or independent-brand versions of male clothing found at Urban Outfitters or even H&M. Dan is always described as being good-looking. His sideburns tend to be larger, and there are days where he may not shave, giving him the classic artist’s rough five o’clock shadow. His hair changes throughout the show, but whether it’s short or long and wavy his hair is always gorgeous!

Jenny is an insecure, vulnerable, aspiring fashion designer with a desperate need to be popular. She takes the elite high school world by storm and is a focus of the Gossip Girl blog.
Background: Jenny is Dan’s sister, his minor by two years. She is smart, talented, and very creative with her fashion designs but she desperately wants to be as popular as Blair Waldorf and she (secretly) wants to date Nate. Jenny spends most of her freshman and sophomore year trying to get on Blair’s good side and to imitate Serena. People sympathize with her after she is nearly raped by Chuck Bass her freshman year. By her sophomore year she mastered the game of deception. During her junior year, Blair graduates and leaves her to be Queen B, or should we say Queen J? This is also the same year Jenny moves out of her Brooklyn home and into her new step-mother’s – Lily’s – home. However, her friend and now stepbrother Eric recognizes Jenny is becoming a horrible person, full of manipulation and lies. Jenny begins to deal drugs with and eventually date Damien Daalgard. She lies and claims she lost her virginity to him. She also finally goes after Nate, but he doesn’t tease her or reciprocate the feelings. Jenny’s life begins to spin more and more out of control, and Jenny ends up sleeping with Chuck. She goes away to live with her mother in Hudson, but is still planning on applying to Parson’s School of Design in Manhattan so she may pursue her career dreams.
Relationships: Jenny dates Asher Hornsby her freshman year of high school, but their relationship was short-lived as he was gay. Nate is always nice to Jenny, and she has crushed on him for a very long time, but never seems to win him over. She dates Damien Daalgard, but ends up loosing her virginity to Chuck. Jenny has yet to have a long-term relationship.
Personality: Jenny thinks of herself as a normal or even less-than-average girl trying to make it into the Upper East Side social and fashion worlds. She is very insecure yet at the same time tries to appear as though she is bursting with confidence. Because of this one flaw, she often sacrifices herself and her morals in order to gain things that will make her feel accepted and secure, such as high social status and a boyfriend. However, she has been sent away from Manhattan for a while and so far is not up for any more games of deception.
Style: Jenny’s style is complex. In the first half of her high school career, Jenny sacrificed a lot of time, effort, and money, to make sure she looked just like the other kids at her school. As a freshman she dressed in pink dresses, cropped cardigans, headbands and sparkles. She has a side part and her hair is often wavy or softly curled, sometimes in a bun. By her sophomore year she is a bit more confident in wearing more daring styles and she cuts her hair, but she still tries to fit in. For the first half of high school, she wears pastels with pops and splashes of bright color, short skirts, long coats, and plaids. By her junior and senior years Jenny is much more confident in her own personal fashion tastes. She gets extensions and side bangs. Jenny wears bolder clothes and makeup while still staying fashion-forward. She begins to wear longer cardigans, longer necklaces, and chunkier boots. She wears darker pieces, but still pairs them with bold colorful items.
Blair Cornelia Waldorf

Blair Cornelia Waldorf is, debatably, the central character of the entire series (if not tied with Serena)! Gossip Girl creator Cecily von Ziegesar describes Blair as “a girl of extremes”. She is the Queen B and b*tch of Manhattan’s Elite, and the Gossip Girl blog follows her b*tchy activities very closely.
Background: Blair Waldorf was born to a prominent businessman of a father and a high-end fashion designer of a mother; she has been spoiled all her life. Blair spent the majority of her high school career securing her spot as the most popular, talented, and smartest girl in her school. She severely suffered from an eating disorder in her freshman and sophomore year, possibly even during Junior High. Blair dated Nate Archibald from kindergarten up until her junior year of high school, Season 1 & 2 of the show, when her best friend Serena inexplicably moved back to Manhattan. Blair’s father also left her mother for a male model during this time. During her junior year, she also fell for Chuck Bass, solidified her status as the most academically talented girl in her class, and participated in social warfare with Jenny Humphrey. This was a very turbulent end of high school for Blair, but Blair continued to seek love, power, and knowledge. Blair first attends NYU, then Columbia University. Blair also earns a job at W Magazine. Blair’s main focus at the moment is becoming a strong, influential career woman in the world of magazine editors.
Relationships: Blair and Chuck have a long-lasting love. Blair dated Nate for the majority of her life. Blair has also dated Lord Marcus Beaton and Prince Louis Grimaldi.
Personality: Blair loves foreign films, romantic classics, and Audrey Hepburn movies. She loves the island of Manhattan more than any other place in the world – even Paris! While Blair is hard working, she is still extremely spoiled. She tries very hard to succeed in all aspects of her life because, while she very much enjoys having all things handed to her on a silver platter, she subconsciously (and perhaps consciously) doesn’t feel as deserving and feels as though she needs to earn more things in her life than buy them. Still, Blair is very proud of being a snobbish b*tch, and enjoys being the Queen B of the social world. Unlike most other characters on the show, her most complex mental and emotional problems not only include love and dating issues, but issues of friendship, family, work, disease (her eating disorder), self-confidence and just life in general. Because of these reasons and many more, Blair is considered by critics and sometimes fans to be the most acclaimed, complex, remarkable character of the series.
Style: Cecily von Ziegesar, the creator, claims Blair “dresses as if she were putting on a costume. A trench coat and huge sunglasses when she’s stalking her ex-boyfriend. Towering heels when she’s feeling powerful and wise. Ballet flats when she’s feeling energetic and sweet. She never just gets dressed.” Blair’s signature pieces include headbands, long curls, skirts/dresses (she never wears pants!), collars, lace, ruffles and other classic feminine touches. She is very fashion-forward and wears the latest trends the week before the become mainstream. Blair’s makeup, hair, and outfits are always near perfect and very carefully chosen. Even when she is lounging around her house, she never dresses down.

As one of the richest, most popular, blonde bombshells of Manhattan’s elite, Serena Celia van der Woodsen leads a life that is constantly followed by everyone’s favorite blog, Gossip Girl.
Background: Serena comes from an extremely wealthy and influential family. Her mother gained her rich socialite status by marrying multiple, prominent men. Her brother, Eric, continually struggles with his sexuality (he later came out as gay) and happiness. Serena parties hard (with Georgina and other characters) her freshman and sophomore year of high school. During her sophomore year, Serena witnesses a fellow-partier’s death after hooking up with her best friend’s (Blair) boyfriend, Nate. She then enrolls into a Connecticut boarding school, where she continues her partying and excessive flirtation with her tutor Damien and her teacher Ben. In Serena’s junior year of high school, she comes back to Manhattan unannounced, and the Gossip Girl blog made her arrival the talk of the city. Serena reunites with everyone from her past, as well as making new friends such as the Humphrey’s (Dan, Jenny, and Rufus). This is when Season 1 begins.
Relationships: Over the seasons of the Gossip Girl television series, Serena has had many flings and loves, namely Dan Humphrey as well as Nate Archibald, Ben Donovan, Gabriel Edwards, Aaron Rose, Damien Daalgard, Carter Baizen, Trip Vanderbilt, Collin Forester and a few others.
Personality: Serena does her best to avoid rumors or to set the record straight when she can. Serena loves to have fun – to dance, socialize and flirt –regardless of if she’s under the influence or not. She is generally kind to everyone. Even when she is angry with someone, she speaks eloquently and doesn’t scream or shout. She exudes confidences without being pretentious. She tends to always be chasing someone or being chased: she is a very heart-oriented person. Serena subconsciously doesn’t like to be without a boyfriend for prolonged periods of time. With a confusing and histrionic family and a general upbringing in the Upper East Side setting, Serena has a few complex trust and love issues. While Serena doesn’t have to worry about food, water, and shelter, she still strives for the basic human need for love.
Style: She spends much of her time and money shopping! Her style is fun, modern, and very versatile as she has the build and attitude to pull off anything! Serena also likes mixing the latest, chic, fashion-forward articles of clothing and pairing them with a few vintage-styled pieces. She is not afraid to wear anything. Her signature pieces include fitted jackets, unconventional skinny jeans, boots, bangles and shortened hemlines. She tends to wear neutral-toned makeup and usually only uses makeup to accentuate her natural features, though there are exceptions. Her blonde, beach-y waves are practically famous.
